The Three P's - Women within the Works of Kon Satoshi (2020)

This project was an open-ended “Media Project” that could be presented through a medium of our choice. As long as it critically engaged one of the themes discussed over the semester. These themes were: Japanese SF Literature, Utopia/Dystopia, Bodies and Machines, and Virtual Worlds. Or one of the Japanese works discussed in class.
My approach to this assignment was choosing Japanese Science Fiction, as I wanted the further explore its narration and representation. So, I decided to analyze a few of the well-known Japanese SF film director, Satoshi Kon's, notable works: Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent, and Paprika.

Shot by Shot (2020)

The purpose of this assignment was to develop new ways of dissecting specific elements of a movie to understand its artistic makeup. We had to rewatch one of our favorite, non-animated movies, then select one scene from the film with at least two characters and where a major turning point occurs. After figuring out all of that, we had to create a video analysis.

I decided to analyze the scene between Joe's and Beck's first interaction at the boo store in the Netflix series, You, since I felt that was a pivotal mark for the rest of the series' story.

Some of the analysis questions included:

  1. How do the characters move throughout the scene? What objects do they interact with as they move?

  2. What role does light and contrast play in the scene? What is the lighting ratio? What areas in the scene are noticeably dark and how does it play into the overall scene?

  3. What are the light sources (be specific)? Identify the placement of the lights.

  4. How are the camera and lenses used to communicate the pivotal beat? What lenses are used? How does the camera move and why does it move?

Siren Head (2020)

For this project, we had to create a short film that takes place in one location and incorporates Day for Night or Night for Day lighting set up.

Day for Night is a set of cinematic techniques used to simulate a night scene while filming in daylight and Night for Day is the opposite.

The storyline I created for the film was based on the creation of artist Trevor Henderson's Siren Head. It's about two teenagers who find out about the hostile cryptid and urban legend, Siren Head, and are now being chased by government agents because they know too much. The teenagers are caught by the agents, but escape and meet the legend.

We also had to create a shot list, storyboards, and overhead diagrams for the story...
